Prisoner's Interview
Eligibility for Interviews

An under trial inmate is entitled for interviews at interval of every seven days while a convict can have interviews at interval of a fortnight.


How to apply?

Anyone who desires to see a prisoner may apply to the Superintendent of the Prison concerned between 8.00 A.M and 11 A.M on a printed application which is available with petition writer at the Prison gate at cost of Rs 2.


When the meeting is permissible?

Interviews are generally conducted jail wise on days listed below between 10 to 12 AM to 3 to 4 PM. The duration of interview is 45 minutes.


Central Jails Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday
District Jails ‘A’ & ‘B’ Classes Wednesday and Sunday
Sub-Jails Wednesday and Sunday
Women Reformatory Wednesday and Sunday
Young Offenders’ Reformatory Wednesday and Sunday


Who can visit?

Relatives and friends are permitted to have interviews with prisoners to discuss domestic matters only. 3 persons are permitted at a time in an interview.


Articles permitted during visit:

No food articles are allowed for prisoners where the Jail canteens are functional where prisoners are able to obtain permitted eatables and other essential toileteries. In other jails, all categories of prisoners are allowed to receive a reasonable quantity of fruits, biscuits, toiletries, etc from visitors subject to the discretion of the jail incharge. Except convicted prisoners, all others are eligible to receive civil dress also.


Procedure to be followed:

Every visitor will be subject to search by the prison staff. Permissible items such as fruits, biscuits, and toiletries alone will be allowed in limited quantity. Women visitors will be searched by women staff.


Legal Counsel Visit:

The legal counsels can have a reasonable number of visits with the prisoner which is to be conducted in the presence of prison officials but out of hearing distance during the working hours of the prison on all days except government holidays by making an application to the Superintendent.


Letters

Inmates can receive and send letters to their relatives, friends and consul. All written communication by inmates is subject to censorship by prison authorities. Needy inmates are also provided with postcards to write letters.
